WNC high school girls soccer power rankings Week 5

The Western North Carolina winter sports season concluded last week after the NCHSAA high school boys and girls basketball state championships.

Now the attention shifts to spring sports. It's Week 5 of the WNC high school girls soccer season, meaning the season is almost halfway over.

Here is the WNC high school girls soccer power rankings for this week.

1. West Henderson (8-0)

West Henderson asserted itself as the top team in WNC after picking up back-to-back wins vs. Mountain Athletic Conference powerhouses in Roberson and Reynolds. Star forward Marianne Maxon is two goals away from breaking the WNC record for most career goals held by Asheville High's Hillary McKay.

2. Reynolds (7-1)

Reynolds has picked up two impressive wins vs. Hendersonville and Rabun-Gap Nacoochee (Ga.) while losing to top-ranked West Henderson 2-1. Junior goalkeeper Claire Rhoden has only conceded five goals so far.

This week: vs. No. 3 Asheville High (Monday), at Erwin (Wednesday), vs. Polk County (Thursday)

3. Asheville High (4-1-2)

Asheville High has earned impressive wins vs. Watauga and Mooresville while recording draws against Charlotte Catholic and East Lincoln. The Cougars are averaging three goals per game behind star forwards Peyton Case and Lily Foo who have five apiece.

This week: at No. 2 (Reynolds), vs. No. 4 Roberson (Wednesday)

4. Roberson (4-3)

Roberson may have three losses already, but they all came against quality competition in No. 1 West Henderson, Hibriten and Charlotte Catholic. Junior Kate Pratt has nine out of the team's 31 goals so far.

This week: at Enka (Monday), at No. 3 Asheville High (Wednesday)

5. Brevard (9-0)

Brevard is off to an undefeated start, thanks to sophomore Nora Felty and freshman Charley Goodwin, who have scored 17 and 16 goals, respectively. Junior goalkeeper Abby Huter has made 32 saves while allowing only four goals.

6. Hendersonville (5-2)

Hendersonville has won five straight after dropping its first two games to No. 1 West Henderson and No. 2 Reynolds. The Bearcats backline has only allowed two goals in the winning streak.

7. Asheville Christian Academy (1-1)

Asheville Christian Academy began its season last week. The Lions are ranked seventh because they were the NCISAA Class 3A state runner-up and return star forward Holly Lanter who scored 35 goals last year.

This week: at Hickory Grove Christian (Tuesday), at Enka (Thursday)

8. Madison (4-0)

Senior forward Amber Hernandez has scored five of the team's 15 goals and added six assists. Madison has also only allowed one goal.

This week: at Mountain Heritage (Wednesday), vs. North Buncombe (Thursday)

9. Murphy (7-0)

Murphy has only conceded two goals so far this season while adding 31.

This week: at Swain County (Monday), vs. Highlands (Thursday)

10. Swain County (4-2)

Swain County has averaged over three goals per game so far. Its only losses have come against North Buncombe and Thomas Jefferson.

This week: at No. 9 Murphy (Monday), at Hayesville (Thursday)
