Serial bank robbery suspect, Kelvin Wayne Simmons is scheduled to be in Buncombe County court Wednesday. Simmons is accused of robbing banks across North Carolina and leading police on a high-speed chase that ended in a head-on crash on Interstate 240 in West Asheville last Thursday. Charges include first-degree kidnapping, common law robbery, assault on a female, felony possession of cocaine and flee/elude arrest.

There’s a new, very public push to raise teacher pay in the region. Numerous teachers and concerned residents spoke at Tuesday’s Buncombe County Commissioners meeting. They argue that public education is under attack. Their main focus for the 2024 fiscal year budget is to increase teacher pay. Currently, 28% of Buncombe County’s recommended $423.6 million budget goes toward education.

On Thursday, we will find out the next superintendent for Asheville City Schools. Newly appointed, Dr. Rick Cruz withdrew from the role, saying he will stay in Houston to support an immediate family member in a critical medical situation. The next superintendent will be one of the four finalists interviewed by the board.
