ASBURY PARK, N.J. (1010 WINS) — A New Jersey mom has been indicted for the drug overdose that killed her 2-year-old son in January, Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago announced Monday.

Quanique Smith, 26, was indicted by by a Monmouth County Grand Jury with first-degree aggravated manslaughter, two counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, third-degree possession of a controlled dangerous substance, and third-degree hindering apprehension.

Santiago said members of the Asbury Park Police Department responded to an apartment unit on the 100 block of Langford Street in Asbury Park on Jan. 5 shortly after 1 a.m. on a report of an unresponsive child.

The toddler was located and rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead about an hour later.

The prosecutor said Smith left heroin and fentanyl around the apartment where she lived with the two-year-old and his five-year-old sibling. Investigators said the boy ingested the drugs, which directly caused his death.

Smith was arrested and charged later that same day.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact MCPO Detective Stephen Cavendish at 800-533-7443 or Asbury Park Detective Anthony Houlis at 732-502-4582.
