FAMU alumna named CEO of powerhouse hair brand, The Mane Choice

After attending Florida A&M University years ago as a young scholar from Memphis, Tennessee, alumna Chasity Monroe has returned to the Highest of Seven Hills as the CEO of a multimillion-dollar hair brand to be celebrated by the community that helped mold her. Monroe, 41, was appointed the new CEO of The Mane Choice – a major textured-hair care and wellness brand – earlier this month to move the company into its next chapter. She'll be recognized during a "Rattler CEO Moment" spotlight as part of the university's Corporate and Alumni Luncheon at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 23, which comes during FAMU's annual homecoming week of festivities. “Homecoming is such a great time, and obviously this year is even more magnified because of the fact that I'm coming back as a CEO," Monroe, a graduate of FAMU's School of Business and Industry , told the Tallahassee Democrat during an interview outside of the SBI building. “I think it really is proof that SBI at FAMU does such an amazing job of pulling in the next generation of leaders. Ted's Montana Grill closed for holidays this year

Tallahassee diners won’t be able to get a Thanksgiving or Christmas meal at Ted’s Montana Grill this year. The restaurant chain announced Oct. 22 that all of its locations, including the one in Tallahassee, will close on Thanksgiving and Christmas each year to give employees the holidays off. “Thanksgiving has been one of our biggest sales days, but family comes first, and giving our team time with loved ones is one way we show our appreciation,” CEO and co-founder George McKerrow said in a news release. That means Ted’s will be closed Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26, and Christmas Day, Dec. 25, this year. The local spot is at 1954 Village Green Way, just off Capital Circle Northeast. The chain also plans to host holiday dinners for families facing hardships or who have demonstrated exceptional strength, kindness or generosity. Community members can nominate a family by emailing bigskyspirit@tedsmontanagrill.com by Nov. 11. Nominations should include the family’s story, the nominee’s full name and contact information. Homeless artist finds hope on a Tallahassee sidewalk

A cotton candy-colored sunset over a tropical island. A crisp starry night falling over a mountain range. Stephon Davis can imagine himself transported to these places as he paints them onto a canvas. Back in reality, the 49-year-old is sitting on the hot sidewalk along Village Square Boulevard in Tallahassee, dripping in sweat as he tries to make a living. How Stephon Davis became a homeless artist Davis has been homeless for nearly two years. He uses his art not just as a form of income, but as an escape. When his mother died nearly three years ago, he was left with her bills, which he couldn't keep up with. This led to Davis being unable to pay his own rent and having his car repossessed, leaving him without transportation to work, he says. He lost his job as a construction worker restoring homes damaged by natural disasters. He wound up in Tallahassee while working with his cousins writing raps and poetry. Eventually, they all went their separate ways. After the series of unfortunate events and financial hardships, Davis ended up on the streets and has gone back to the thing he loved doing since he was a child —
