APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) Appleton business owners should stay vigilant; and be aware of shoppers with sticky fingers.
So far this year, the Appleton Police Department has taken complaints of 81 retail theft cases. At this time last year, that number was 61. Appleton Police Chief, Polly Olson, says items in high demand are most targeted to be stolen. Price increases may also lead to higher numbers of theft cases.
But stealing can come with a pretty steep price.
“A retail theft ticket of first offense is in the $300+ range for a fine, so it’s hefty” said Chief Olson.
Chief Olson says that business owners can invest in security cameras and other technology to prevent these issues from happening.
