Happy Memorial Day, Apopka!

Memorial Day is a solemn and significant occasion in the United States. It is a day when the nation comes together to remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the military.

The roots of Memorial Day can be traced back to the aftermath of the American Civil War. In the spring of 1865, following the end of the war, communities across the country began organizing tributes and ceremonies to honor the soldiers who had lost their lives. One notable event was held in Charleston, South Carolina, where recently freed slaves gathered to give a proper burial to Union soldiers who had been buried in a makeshift mass grave. These early observances marked the beginning of what would eventually become Memorial Day.

Today, Memorial Day serves as a time for the nation to remember and pay tribute to all fallen service members, regardless of their era or conflict. It is a day of reflection and remembrance, marked by various ceremonies, parades, and visits to cemeteries and memorials. The national flag is often flown at half-staff until noon as a symbol of respect and mourning. Families and communities gather to honor their loved ones, sharing stories and memories of those who gave their lives for their country.

It is the soldier's sacrifice to our country.

The City of Apopka and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 10147 are hosting an event to honor the lives and legacy of our fallen military heroes in the Veterans Memorial section of the Edgewood/Greenwood Cemetery. It's a time to gather and remember the ultimate sacrifice that many soldiers have made in defense of our country and our freedom.

Memorial Day is not only a time for remembrance but also an opportunity to express gratitude and appreciation for the sacrifices made by the men and women in uniform. These brave individuals answered the call of duty, leaving behind their families, dreams, and aspirations to protect the values and freedoms that define our nation. Their selflessness and dedication deserve our utmost respect and recognition.

Beyond barbecues and long weekends, it is crucial to engage in meaningful acts of commemoration. We can visit local veterans' hospitals and engage in activities that honor and support living veterans. Donating to veteran organizations, volunteering at military events, and participating in community service projects are ways to contribute to the well-being of those who have served and continue to serve.

Furthermore, educating future generations about the significance of Memorial Day and the sacrifices made by our servicemen and servicewomen is essential. Schools, community organizations, and families can teach children about the values of courage, duty, and sacrifice, ensuring that the memory of fallen heroes lives on.

May we never forget their courage and selflessness, and may we always cherish the values they fought to preserve.

I hope everyone is having a great weekend and Memorial Day, and thinking about our veterans, and remembering those who gave all. I still have wishes and hopes one day, Apopka will build a veteran's park in this city. I know we have some veteran honorary notable items around town, but it would be wonderful to have it all come full circle with a veteran park, something similar to Leesburg's Veteran's Park, here in Apopka. Memorial Day weekend we used to go to the Zellwood Corn Festival, and the same weekend, used to go to Palatka, and catch their big riverfront celebration, with people bungee jumping out over the river and people parachuting over the river. Once a parachuter came down, and got a little too close to the bungee tower where someone was bungeeing....whew! I think that ended some of that activity there. Their downtown is right on the riverfront. People were allowed to park along the big high bridge over the river, that divided Palatka, into North and South Palatka Lots of people out boating and pulling up anchoring, to listen to the music and just chilling out. They had some great looking seafood cooked up, even though with my occasional gout, the foot doctor told me stay away from seafood, but I am not a fan of seafood much anyway, but it did look so good, when you walked along there, and saw all of that golden seafood cooked up, at the festival. My husband loves seafood, and he got some there.
