A detention center inmate is facing charges after making a failed attempt to escape through a kitchen exit, Anne Arundel County Police say.
Police say on Thursday at approximately 10:15 a.m., officers responded to a report of an assault of an employee at the Jennifer Road Detention Center located at 131 Jennifer Road in Annapolis.
According to police, during their investigation, officers learned that the suspect, an inmate, was able to gain entry into an unoccupied office within the kitchen area of the facility.
Police say inside that office, the suspect was able to manipulate a locked cabinet and get a kitchen knife. After getting the knife, the suspect encountered two women, who were contracted kitchen employees. The suspect grabbed one of them.
As the second employee fled to get assistance the suspect held onto the victim and attempted to move toward the kitchen exit. As the suspect neared the exit, a detention officer came through the door and confronted the suspect.
Police say within less than one minute of the victim being grabbed by the suspect, the detention officer was able to engage the suspect, disarm him, and take him into custody.
The suspect arrested was 35-year-old Richard Daniel Price, of Baltimore.
There were no reported physical injuries as a result of the incident. Price was charged accordingly.
