After a rainy few days in the Upstate, some residents enjoyed the sunshine on Memorial Day outside at Lake Hartwell. Hiedi Perkins and her family have been visiting Darwin Wright Park in Anderson County on Memorial Day for more than 20 years. They spent the day grilling, playing board games and swimming in the lake. “This is just one of those things we look forward to every year, to do this on Memorial Day," said Perkins. Other people spent the day out on their boats and remembering those who have died serving our country. “It’s a special day for me, I did my 30 years, and it’s a day to remember the fallen, the fallen soldiers, and I have some friends that have been killed," said Rafael Caraballo, a boater. "It’s a good day to know where we’re at and be thankful for what we have and grateful.” Memorial Day weekend also marks the unofficial start of summer. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources reminds boaters to make sure they have the right safety equipment on their boats before leaving the dock and enough life jackets for those on board that are the right size.
