Foreshadowing found in Amory's baseball state championship run
It was a storybook ending for the Amory Panthers. After losing so much to the March 24 tornadoes, the baseball team has just defied all odds and secured the 3A State Championship.
WAPT News spoke extensively with the team in early May when the Panthers were yet to start the second-round playoff series. Cayden Smith described what it was like when the tornado struck.
"Everything was sucking us back down the hallway," Smith said. "I thought the whole house was going to collapse on top of us. That's the only thing that was going through my mind was that I love my family and I'm glad my mom and my sister weren't there."
Homes, the baseball field and much of the town were destroyed by the tornadoes. But the baseball team delivered, despite being forced to play every game on the road.
"These guys had enough pressure before this, and this just added to their plate," said head baseball coach Chris Pace. "They've handled it well and we're blessed with some older guys, some great leaders. We've got some brothers on this team."
A couple of those brothers came from the Maranto family. Walker, with two hits in the clinching game, and Braden, winning the MVP in the State Championship Series.
