Alex Storako shines again in Big 12 debut win over Iowa State
By John Williams,
Alex Storako allowed a hit in the bottom of the second, and that’s all the offense that the Iowa State Cyclones could muster in the Oklahoma Sooners’ 3-0 win to open Big 12 play.
The Michigan transfer was fantastic yet again, picking up the complete-game, one-hit shutout to move to 11-0 on the season. Storako struck out five and threw 94 pitches. She only reached a full count with two of the 22 batters she faced in her Big 12 debut.
Storako lowered her earned run average to 0.81 on the season in her 51.2 innings pitched.
At the plate, the Cyclones kept the Sooners at bay relative to recent history. Ellie Spelhaug, Jaiden Ralston, and Saya Swain held the Sooners to just three runs on seven hits and five walks.
The Sooners got the scoring going in the top of the second after Alyssa Brito and Haley Lee singled to put runners on first and second with just one out. Then, Kinzie Hansen, who’s been on a tear since joining the lineup, drove in Brito from second with an RBI double and a 1-0 lead. Lee then scored on a Riley Boone fielder’s choice to make it 2-0 Oklahoma.
The Sooners struck again in the sixth inning. Jayda Coleman drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the inning. And it was all the Sooners needed in their 3-0 win over the Cyclones. They preserved the pitching staff for Saturday’s doubleheader.
Kinzie Hansen and Grace Lyons were the only Sooners to record multi-hit games on Friday afternoon.
The Oklahoma Sooners moved to 28-1 on the season and are in the midst of a 20-game winning streak. The shutout is their 18th of the season.
The Sooners return to the diamond on Saturday for a pair of contests, the first starting at 1 p.m. CT.
