AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) - Winds have finally calmed down after a hellacious bout of wind yesterday. Tucumcari and other locations in New Mexico gusted to and over 70 mph.
Winds, while they are light this morning, are not our main focus today. We are monitoring the location of an arctic airmass that is draped across the Texas panhandle. Amarillo has fallen 20 degrees in two hours due to this front easing further south and west. This front will create a wide variety of high temperatures today which will range from the middle 30s in the northeast panhandles to the low 60s in the southwest Texas Panhandle. The cold air hangs around for approximately 24 hours.
The next weather maker will arrive Sunday with another vigorous upper-level low diving through the Desert Southwest. Confidence is increasing that the High Plains will have another round of unsettled weather Sunday afternoon and evening, but a dryline could dictate what kind of inclement weather you could see in your county.
Conditions west of the dryline will feature more high winds and fire concerns but an abnormally early severe weather setup could be shaping up for the far eastern panhandles. Conditions east of the dryline will become favorable for thunderstorm development Sunday evening and storms will have the potential to become severe with all hazards possible as these storm move into western Oklahoma Sunday night.
