A man and woman are hospitalized Friday night after police intervened in a domestic assault and shot the suspect.
State police say they were helping Brewer police look for a vehicle, the occupants of which had been involved in an assault. At around 9:45 Friday morning, Troopers learned that the couple was near Argyle Road in Alton.
When they arrived, troopers found the car with a man they later learned was Djvan Carter assaulting a woman who was also in the car. Seeing police, Carter reportedly tried to drive away, appearing to aim for one of the troopers.
State police Cpl. Blaine Silk fired his gun, hitting Carter. While waiting for an ambulance, troopers found that the woman who was in the car had serious injuries from the assault.
Both Carter and the woman are receiving treatment at Eastern Maine Medical Center. WMTW is working to learn more about Carter's condition, as well as his age and city of residence.
As is standard procedure, detectives from the Maine Attorney General's Office and State Police Major Crimes unit are investigating the shooting and domestic violence respectively.
Officials say crime scene technicians continued to collect evidence at the scene of the shooting through Friday night.
