IDOT provides update on U.S. Route 51 sinkhole
JACKSON COUNTY, Ill. (KFVS) - We’re learning more about what caused a sinkhole in southern Illinois that forced the closure of Highway 51 in Jackson County. The sinkhole is located just north of De Soto and has been causing headaches for both the Illinois Department of Transportation and drivers who use the road to get from Du Quoin to Carbondale.
Softball Recap: Goreville finds playoff glory versus Shawnee
Goreville extended their postseason success on Saturday against Shawnee. They blew past the Shawnee Redskins 13-2. The win made it back-to-back victories for Goreville. Abigail (Abby) Compton and Breanna (Brea) Suits made a splash while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Compton struck out 11 batters over five innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits. Meanwhile, Suits tossed an inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Compton has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't pitched less than five innings in three consecutive pitching appearances. At bat, Compton went 1-for-2 with three RBI, while Suits scored two runs and stole four bases while going 2-for-3.

Korean War soldier from Cobden, Illinois accounted for by Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency
COBDEN, IL — The remains of a soldier killed during the Korean War have been identified as 21-year-old U.S. Army Private 1st Class Bryan Myers Jr. of Cobden, Illinois. According to a news release from the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, Myers’ remains were accounted for on Feb. 27, 2024. However, his family only recently received a full briefing regarding his identification.
2024 Annabelle Festival set for June 8
