Anselmo-Merna will host Arcadia/Loup City for a girls and boys basketball doubleheader tonight in Merna. The Anselmo-Merna girls team is off to a 2-0 start with wins over Paxton and Sandhills Valley in the opening week of the season. Arcadia/Loup City is looking for their first win of the young season after falling to Pleasanton and Broken Bow in the opening week of the season. The boys game features a pair of 1-1 teams. Anselmo-Merna won their season opener over Paxton but fell by 3 to Sandhills/Valley the next night. Arcadia/Loup City dropped their season opener to Broken Bow but came back to defeat Pleasanton the next day. Tonight’s games will be broadcast on KBBN 95.3 FM and kbbn.com. A live video stream of the games, accompanied by the radio call, will be available through sandhillsexpress.com on the Sandhills Express Facebook page and You Tube channel. Sargent man pleas not guilty to counts in District Court
One arraignment was heard in Custer County District Court on Thursday. Mark Koch, age 61 of Sargent, entered a not guilty plea to two alleged charges. Count one, abuse of a vulnerable adult (class IIIA felony), carries no minimum charge and a maximum charge of three years imprisonment, a $10,000 fine, or both. Count two, second-degree false imprisonment (class I misdemeanor), carries no minimum charge and a maximum charge of three-month imprisonment, a fine of $500, or both.
Burwell man sentenced to jail following suspicious death of girlfriend and license violation
BURWELL, Neb. — A Burwell man facing charges after the death of his girlfriend will serve jail time on a misdemeanour charge. According to court records, Calvin Measner pleaded no contest and was found guilty of driving under a suspended license. Two counts of obstructing an officer, and tampering with evidence were dropped in exchange.
Burwell woman gets 2 years probation for driving car into bait shop
BURWELL, Neb. (KSNB) - On Thursday, a Garfield County judge sentenced a Burwell woman convicted of crashing in to a bait shop this spring. The judge sentenced Tammy Melling, 43, to two years probation, one year suspended driver’s license, as well as a suspended sentence of 90 days in jail if she doesn’t meet the terms of her probation. She was also ordered to pay restitution to the owner of Dad’s Calamus East bait shop.

LINCOLN – The late fight from eighth seeded Burwell wasn’t enough to overcome a talented Guardian Angels Central Catholic, as the Longhorns fell in a sweep in the State Volleyball quarterfinals Thursday afternoon 25-18, 25-13, and 25-21. Guardian Angel Central Catholic earned the top overall spot in Class D1 with a final regular season record of 25-5. The #1 Bluejays hoped to continue their history of success, as GACC entered the state tournament for the first time since 2020. GACC was making their twentieth state tournament appearance Thursday afternoon, having claimed four state championships so far in their history.
