College baseball: Mount Union head coach Paul Hesse earns 600th career victory

AKRON — The Mount Union baseball team gave longtime head coach Paul Hesse another milestone victory on Wednesday.

Hesse earned his 600th career win when the Purple Raiders beat Wooster 4-2 at Canal Park. A three-run third inning rallied Mount Union into the lead and improved Hesse's overall record to 600-475-5 in 28 seasons.

"I'm just pleased I had the opportunity to be in this position to coach these guys and coach all the guys who played for me," Hesse said. "That's the only reason I got 600 ... because of them."

Hesse is the winningest coach in Mount Union baseball history. He is also one of six coaches in Ohio Athletic Conference history to have won more than 500 games.

Joe Lenart's two-run double highlighted the Purple Raiders' three-run third. Alex Stegman and Chris Viamonte also singled in runs for Mount Union (24-10).

Leo Fornara threw two perfect innings of relief to pick up the win. Chuck Hawley allowed just a run and two hots over four innings for the save.

Katie Clark sets record, helps Mount Union women's lacrosse earn share of title

Katie Clark became the Mount Union women's lacrosse team's career points leader and helped the Purple Raiders earn a share of the Ohio Athletic Conference title in Wednesday's 13-7 win at John Carroll.

Clark's goal 52 seconds into the game gave her a record 322 career points. She finished with three goals for the Purple Raiders (11-3, 6-1).

Mount Union goalkeeper Abby Lindkvist tied a career high with 15 saves for the second straight game.
