A visit to the peony garden
Every Spring, the peony garden at the Allerton Park and Retreat Center explodes into an ombre palette of colors ranging from whites to dark magentas. The garden has over 50 different varieties of peony flowers that are in bloom from late April to June. I went there this past weekend to catch many of the flowers in peak bloom. Walking up from the main entrance, past the hedges that block the view of the flowers, you smell the flowers before you see them. As you turn the corner, you’re greeted by stripes of whites, pinks, corals, and all the shades in between. Each row of flowers has their name and info displayed and it’s fun to watch people walk by as they observe all the varieties. Some of the flowers have already finished blooming, some are in their prime, and others have yet to start. Either way, if you haven’t been out there, you still have time. And if you have been, what variety is your favorite?
