An Albuquerque Metro security officer is facing a criminal charge after he allegedly hit a woman three times with a metal baton. The incident happened on April 1.
Security officer Christopher Romero responded to a woman at Alvarado Transit Center along with another officer. During the discussion, the woman attempted to walk away twice before allegedly being struck by Romero, according to the criminal complaint.
Austin Mans, the second responding security guard, reported Romero's behavior after deeming his actions excessive. In an interview with police, he said the victim was told she needed to leave and no other commands were given.
The security guard said it's taught in training that a baton is to be used only if absolutely necessary, according to the criminal complaint. Mans also said that Romero would have continued to hit the victim if he had not stepped in.
The victim was never detained after the incident with police to allow medical care to be provided, according to the criminal complaint.
Romero has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was charged on Thursday, June 1 and will be in court on July 5.
