An Albuquerque man was arrested after an hours-long SWAT standoff after breaking into a home on the west side.
The incident started at Chamiza Elementary School, where 41-year-old Thomas Howell was acting suspiciously, according to an Albuquerque police resource officer. Howell was at the school looking for his son that's enrolled at the school.
A second Albuquerque officer arrived at the school and found that he had a felony arrest warrant for a domestic violence incident. Howell managed to escape pursuing officers by jumping fences and running through yards.
He was able to climb into a window and get into a home. Police later learned that an older woman was inside the home when Howell entered. The woman was able to be removed after the front door was breached, according to APD.
Albuquerque SWAT was at the scene of the standoff to try and get him to surrender. Howell was hiding in the attic and was taken into custody before 7 p.m.
He was taken into custody for the felony warrant, along with a charge of breaking and entering and aggravated fleeing of an officer.
