Video shows man with AR-15 at Flix Brewhouse in Albuquerque
Darnell Hill has a violent past.
“He did point a gun at the victim's head, his ex-girlfriend's head, and threatened to kill her,” Joshua P. Hasyniec, a Bernalillo County Prosecutor said.
In total hill has faced five criminal charges, and three are felonies.
The most recent felony charge has prosecutors thankful the worse didn't happen.
“If not for the bravery of those employees that day, this be on national news as one of the most recent mass shootings in America," Hasyniec said.
Last Friday around 11 p.m. Hill walked into Flix Brewhouse in Albuquerque with an AR-15 rifle.
On Wednesday, prosecutors fought to keep him behind bars in a pre-trial detention hearing.
His public safety assessment suggested he be released.
“There is nothing more dangerous than going into a public area, as the defendant did, with a high capacity, high caliber weapon,” Hasyniec said.
Prosecutors showed surveillance video from the night of the incident, while a Sheriff's Detective recounts what he remembers.
“Mr. Darnell Hill entered the kitchen, and he had the rifle in his left hand,” Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Detective, Cameron Carroll said.
But the staff members in the kitchen were able to disarm him.
“They were able to restrain him, and they were able to take the AR-15 from him and secure it,” Carroll said,
But being disarmed didn't stop Hill. In a surveillance video shown in court, staff members and customers can be seen holding the door shut so he couldn't get back inside.
Hill's defense attorney argued her client was talking and not shooting, so he should be released before his trial.
“So, the staff members, as you can see on the surveillance footage, did not run away,” Demyra LaShontae Hover, Hill’s attorney said. “They were engaging in a conversation with him. Even one staff member was laughing.”
Judge Stan Whitaker decided to hold Hill behind bars until trial with no bond.
No trial date has been set.
If convicted Hill could face more than two years in prison.
