ACTION 7 IS FOR JOHN CARDINAL. IT GIVES US AN INSIDE LOOK AT WHAT HAPPENS. DURING THE HEARING SECURITY FOOTAGE WAS SHOWN OF HILL IN THE LOBBY AND KITCHEN OF FLIX BREWHOUSE THE NIGHT OF THE INCIDENT. THOSE IN COURT TODAY SAY IF IT WEREN’T FOR THE BRAVE EMPLOYEES, THINGS COULD HAVE BEEN FAR WORSE. DARNELL HILL HAS A VIOLENT PAST. HE DID POINT A GUN AT THE VICTIM’S HEAD AS EX-GIRLFRIEND’S HEAD AND THREATENED TO KILL HER. IN TOTAL, HILL HAS FACED FIVE CRIMINAL CHARGES. THREE ARE FELONIES, AND THE MOST RECENT FELONY CHARGE HAS PROSIT SHOOTERS THANKFUL THE WORST DIDN’T HAPPEN. IF NOT FOR THE BRAVERY, THOSE EMPLOYEE THAT DAY, THIS COULD WELL BE. NATIONAL NEWS IS ONE OF THE MOST RECENT MASS SHOOTINGS IN AMERICA. LAST FRIDAY, AROUND 11 P.M., HILL WALKED INTO FLIX BREWHOUSE IN ALBUQUERQUE WITH AN AR 15 RIFLE. TODAY, PROSECUTORS WANT TO KEEP HIM BEHIND BARS IN A PRETRIAL DETENTION HEARING. HIS PUBLIC SAFETY ASSESSMENT SUGGEST HE BE RELEASED. THERE IS LITERALLY NOTHING MORE DANGEROUS THAN GOING INTO A PUBLIC AREA, AS A DEFENDANT DID WITH A HIGH CAPACITY, HIGH CALIBER WEAPON. PROSECUTORS SHOWED SURVEILLANCE VIDEO FROM THE NIGHT OF THE INCIDENT WHILE A SHERIFF’S DETECTIVE RECOUNTS WHAT HE REMEMBERS. MR. DARNELL HILL ENTERED THE KITCHEN AND HE HAD THE RIFLE IN HIS LEFT HAND, BUT THE STAFF MEMBERS IN THE KITCHEN WERE ABLE TO DISARM HIM. THEY WERE ABLE TO RESTRAIN HIM AND THEY WERE ABLE TO TAKE THE AR 15 FROM HIM AND SECURE IT IN I BELIEVE IT WAS A CAMERA ROOM OR AN OFFICE. BUT BEING DISARMED DIDN’T STOP HILL. IN THIS VIDEO FROM THE LOBBY, YOU CAN SEE STAFF MEMBERS AND CUSTOMERS HOLDING THE DOOR SHUT SO HE COULDN’T GET BACK INSIDE. HILL’S DEFENSE ATTORNEY ARGUED HER CLIENT WAS TALKING AND NOT SHOOTING, SO HE SHOULD BE RELEASED BEFORE HIS TRIAL. SO THE STAFF MEMBER DID NOT. AS YOU CAN SEE ON THE SURVEILLANCE SURVEILLANCE FOOTAGE, THE STAFF MEMBERS DID NOT RUN AWAY. THEY WERE ACTUALLY ENGAGING IN A CONVERSATION WITH HIM. EVEN ONE STAFF MEMBER WAS LAUGHING BEFORE JUDGE STAN WHITACRE MADE HIS DECISION. HE SAID THIS VOICE THERE WERE VERY BRAVE IN TRYING TO SORT OF DE-ESCALATE WHEN THAT DIDN’T WORK IN TERMS OF GIVING IT UP TO GRAB THE GUN AND TO DISARM HIM. AND I THOUGHT THAT WAS VERY BRAVE OF THEM TO DO THAT. JUDGE WHITAKER DECIDED TO HOLD HILL BEHIND BARS UNTIL TRIAL WITH NO BOND. I’M JO

Darnell Hill has a violent past. “He did point a gun at the victim's head, his ex-girlfriend's head, and threatened to kill her,” Joshua P. Hasyniec, a Bernalillo County Prosecutor said. In total hill has faced five criminal charges, and three are felonies. The most recent felony charge has prosecutors thankful the worse didn't happen. “If not for the bravery of those employees that day, this be on national news as one of the most recent mass shootings in America," Hasyniec said. Last Friday around 11 p.m. Hill walked into Flix Brewhouse in Albuquerque with an AR-15 rifle. On Wednesday, prosecutors fought to keep him behind bars in a pre-trial detention hearing. His public safety assessment suggested he be released. “There is nothing more dangerous than going into a public area, as the defendant did, with a high capacity, high caliber weapon,” Hasyniec said. Prosecutors showed surveillance video from the night of the incident, while a Sheriff's Detective recounts what he remembers. “Mr. Darnell Hill entered the kitchen, and he had the rifle in his left hand,” Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Detective, Cameron Carroll said. But the staff members in the kitchen were able to disarm him. “They were able to restrain him, and they were able to take the AR-15 from him and secure it,” Carroll said, But being disarmed didn't stop Hill. In a surveillance video shown in court, staff members and customers can be seen holding the door shut so he couldn't get back inside. Hill's defense attorney argued her client was talking and not shooting, so he should be released before his trial. “So, the staff members, as you can see on the surveillance footage, did not run away,” Demyra LaShontae Hover, Hill’s attorney said. “They were engaging in a conversation with him. Even one staff member was laughing.” Judge Stan Whitaker decided to hold Hill behind bars until trial with no bond. No trial date has been set. If convicted Hill could face more than two years in prison.
