Driver goes through stop sign, is arrested after fleeing scene

Two people were critically injured when a stolen vehicle ran through a stop sign and hit their vehicle Monday morning.Albuquerque Police Department (APD) officers learned of the crash around 7:45 a.m. and went to the intersection of San Pedro Drive and Bell Avenue, where the collision happened. While investigating, they learned that a maroon Chevy SUV with New Mexico plates had been stolen at the State Fair Grounds and driven east on Bell Avenue at a high rate of speed.The driver, later identified as John Eugene Bearden, Jr., ran through a stop sign at San Pedro Drive and hit a gray Jeep SUV being driven by a 43-year-old with a 10-year-old girl passenger. Both were transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.Bearden fled on foot before police arrived. A resident called them to say a man was hiding in the shed in their backyard.Bearden was taken into custody on Dakota Street by New Mexico State Police officers and one APD officer. He was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He is charged with unlawful taking of a vehicle, leaving the scene of a crash involving serious physical injury, and great bodily harm by vehicle (driving while intoxicated).
