Two local women start podcast promoting an alcohol-free lifestyle
TREATMENT. WELL, ALCOHOLISM, IT’S A HUGE ISSUE IN OUR STATE, REALLY ACROSS THE COUNTRY, TOO. TWO LOCAL WOMEN THERE ON A MISSION TO CHANGE THIS. GENEVIEVE GLASS JOINS US IN STUDIO. SO, GENEVIEVE, YOU MET BOTH OF THEM? YEAH, I SURE DID. TODD, ALLIE HICKMAN AND JESSICA MARTINEZ, THEIR BEST FRIENDS BORN AND RAISED HERE IN NEW MEXICO. NOW, THEY RECENTLY STARTED A PODCAST TO HELP PEOPLE REEVALUATE THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH ALCOHOL. THE STORY YOU’RE ONLY GOING TO SEE RIGHT HERE ON SEVEN. I HAVE BEEN STRUGGLING WITH MY RELATIONSHIP WITH ALCOHOL FOR A WHILE AND KNEW I WANTED TO CUT BACK. I DIDN’T. I KNEW I DIDN’T WANT TO RAISE MY CHILDREN IN AN ALCOHOL HOME. ONCE I BECAME ALCOHOL FREE, I FELT A LOT MORE EMPOWERED IN MY OWN LIFE AND I WAS JUST RACKING MY BRAIN OF WAYS THAT I COULD HELP EMPOWER OTHER PEOPLE. JESSICA MARTINEZ, A MOTHER OF THREE, HASN’T HAD A DRINK FOR THREE AND A HALF YEARS. HER BEST FRIEND, ALLIE HICKMAN, IS ON YEAR SIX. WE JUST WANTED TO TALK AND NORMALIZE JUST BEING ALCOHOL FREE. MOTHERS AND, YOU KNOW, JUST MILLENNIAL AND PEOPLE. SO THEYLAUNCHED A PODCAST CALLED MEXICO STD LIKE INTOXICATED, BUT ON MOCKTAIL AISLES. YEAH, IN JUST OVER A MONTH SINCE THEIR LUNCH, THEY NOW HAVE TWAS. AND LISTENERS SOME EVEN IN GERMANY AND TOKYO WE USE THE TERM AF. FOR US IT’S ALCOHOL FREE. THEY HAVE EPISODES ON HOW TO NAVIGATE DATING, TRAVELING AND BEING A MOM ALL WITHOUT ALCOHOL. WE REALLY STARTED IT FOR OUR OWN ALCOHOL FREE JOURNEY AND REALLY WE WANTED TO START TO EVEN HELP ONE PERSON. WE’VE HAD PEOPLE WRITE US AND TELL US, YOU KNOW, BECAUSE OF THIS PODCAST I HAVE, I’M ON DAY FIVE OF BEING SOBER. AND TO HEAR THAT AND THAT WE TRULY ARE HELPING PEOPLE IN THEIR COMMUNITY IS JUST UNREAL FOR US AND JUST TAKES ONE STEP AT A TIME. NOT BEATING OURSELF UP, GIVING YOURSELF GRACE. “I had been struggling with my relationship with alcohol for a while, and I knew I wanted to cut back,” said Jessica Martinez. “I knew I didn't want to raise my children in a home with alcohol.”Martinez, a mother of three, hasn't had a drink for three and a half years. Her best friend, Ale Hickman, is on year six.“We just wanted to talk and normalize being alcohol-free mothers,” said Hickman.They recently started a podcast called Mocksicated – like intoxicated, except with mocktails – to help people re-evaluate their relationship with alcohol. “Once I became alcohol-free, I felt a lot more empowered in my own life,” said Martinez. It’s been just over a month since their launch. Now, they have 2,000 listeners, some even in Germany and Tokyo.They have episodes on how to navigate dating, traveling and being a mom, all without alcohol. “We really started it for our own alcohol-free journey,” said Hickman. “We wanted to start it to even help one person. We've had people write us and tell us because of this podcast, I’m on day five of being sober. To hear that we truly are helping people in the community is just unreal for us.”“It just takes one step at a time, not beating ourselves up, giving yourself grace,” said Hickman. “You can change your life. You really can.” New episodes launch every Thursday on your favorite podcast app.
