ALBION — For many years Robert L. Shegog kept parts of his life a secret.

The Albion High School alumnus reveals these truths — that he is gay and that he was diagnosed with HIV in 1986 — in his new autobiography, “Wrestling with the Truth.”

Shegog will visit the Albion District Library at 5 p.m. June 6 to discuss the book, sharing the challenges of being gay and HIV positive in the 1980s, 1990s, and into the 2000s, including the stresses of keeping so much of himself secret in order to protect his career.

The event is free and open to the public; no library card is necessary.

“As we enter Pride Month, it’s so vital to hear the stories of those too afraid to share their story,” said Andy Myers, head of public services at the Albion District Library. “Robert’s journey spans decades, and we’re fortunate to be able to hear about his life and the wisdom he has to share.”

Shegog graduated from Albion High School in 1970 after which he attended and wrestled for Olivet College. His love of wrestling and a passion for teaching led Shegog to mentor a number of athletes, including Nick Kehagias, co-author of “Wrestling with the Truth.”

Copies of the book will be available for purchase June 6.
