STMA team recaps from last week

The following is a recap of STMA games that took place last week.

Knights take 6th in Monticello

The St. Michael-Albertville boys’ golf team played in the 2024 Monticello Boys Invite at the Monticello Country Club on April 15.

STMA shot 318, five behind Buffalo and eight behind Section 7-3A opponent Monticello. Sophomore Tate Helland and junior Quinn Opiola both shot a 78 and tied for 17th overall. Sophomore Brendan Heitkamp (80) was 29th while junior James Anderson and sophomore Gavin Berg (82) tied for 37th. Junior Michael Labrador shot an 85.

On Tuesday, the Knights played in the Tanner’s Brook Invite. On Thursday at the Braemer Golf Course, STMA plays in the Lake Conference Opener.

Labrador wins twice, takes second

The St. Michael-Albertville girls’ golf team played in three meets last week. On April 15, the Knights played in a Lake Conference Meet in Buffalo. They also played in two Lake Conference Triangular Meets, one on April 17and the other on April 18.

Abigail Labrador shot a meet-low 68. STMA took third after shooting 335. Junior Martha Effertz (85) took 15th, junior Faith Johnson (89) took 19th and junior Maddie Tillman (93) finished in 20th. Senior Lauryn Mikolich (102) and junior Renae Foster (108) also played.

STMA won the Lake Conference Tri last Wednesday with a team score of 188. Eden Prairie (194) was second and Buffalo (204) was third.

After shooting a 42 during the eight-hole meet, Labrador (42) shot the lowest by four strokes. Effertz (47) took third, Johnson (49) tied for sixth and Foster (50) tied for ninth. Tillman shot a 55 and Mikolich shot a 57.

One day later, STMA (181) took second to Minnetonka (162). Hopkins (220) was third. Labrador (40) finished in second, two shots behind Ruby Reding (Minnetonka). Johnson (41) tied for third, Tillman (49) took ninth and Foster (51) was 10th. Junior Layla Flemming and Effertz shot 56.

STMA played against Minnetonka and Hopkins again on Tuesday at Oak Ridge Country Club and on Wednesday, they were in Alexandria.

Knights’ offense in midseason form

The St. Michael-Albertville boys’ lacrosse team outscored their opponents 54-32 during a 3-0 start to the year. During a road trip to Minnetonka on April 18 the Knights left with a 15-13 win. On Saturday, April 20, STMA beat Providence Academy 21-6.

Reme Lobitz scored seven goals and had one assist against the Skippers. Mason Mogard had a hat trick and Luke Erlandson had two goals and four assists. Caleb Waller, Jackson Cross and Jonathan Landon also scored against Minnetonka.

It was a feeding frenzy against the Lions. Lobitz scored nine goals, Caleb Waller scored five times, Mogard had four, Erlandson had a hat trick and Landon had another goal. Goalie Colton McLellan made 18 combined saves during the last two games.

On Tuesday, STMA plays on the road against Eden Prairie. On Thursday, the Knights play in Monticello against the Magic starting at 6 p.m. On Tuesday, April 30, STMA plays in Edina.

STMA girls’ lacrosse falls to Skippers after opener gets postponed

The St. Michael-Albertville girls’ lacrosse team was supposed to open the season against Shakopee on April 16 but it was postponed until with no make-up day scheduled.

That meant that the Knights started their 2024 season with a road game against Minnetonka on April 18. The Skippers won 13-2. Danika Weiland and Kylie Voss scored for STMA. Piper Peterson had a team-high eight ground balls.

On Monday, STMA played Monticello. On Tuesday, they played Eden Prairie. On Friday at 7 p.m., the Knights play Robbinsdale Armstrong/Cooper at Armstrong High School.

Softball 3-1 to start 2024

After back-to-back wins, the St. Michael-Albertville softball team is off to a 3-1 start. On April 15, the Knights beat Minnetonka 9-8 and on April 18 they beat Centennial 14-5.

STMA scored three runs during the bottom of the seventh to win in dramatic walk-off fashion. Callan Wagner stepped into the box as a pinch-hitter. With one swing of the bat, STMA won 9-8. They started the bottom of the inning trailing 8-6.

Camryn Dubel, Gaston, Ella Luoto, Peterson and Taylor Tschida had two hits against the Skippers. Kendra Behrens, Becca Odland and of course, Wagner, also recorded a hit. Behrens, Tschida and Peterson (two) all had doubles.

On the mound, Behrens allowed six runs in five innings with four strikeouts. Luoto earned the win after allowing two runs in two innings of relief.

Against the Cougars, STMA hit a combined 12-for-37. Gaston was 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBI. Seven different hitters had at least one and nine different batters recorded for the Knights.

In the pitcher’s circle, Brooklynn Bigalke allowed three runs (two earned) in two innings. Behrens earned the win after allowing two runs (one earned) in five innings off three hits.

STMA had a home game Monday against Eden Prairie and Wednesday against Elk River. Their next home game is on Monday, April 29 against Wayzata at 4:30 p.m.

Girls 2nd, boys 3rd at Shakopee Relays

The STMA boys and girls track and field teams were in Shakopee on April 18 for the Shakopee Relays. The girls’ took second (355.5) while the boys’ took third (330). Three individuals and one relay team took first. 21 other individuals and relays finished in the top five of their event.

Jackie Bergeron won the girls’ pole vault (10-7). Maverick Kneefe won the boys’ triple jump (41-6.75) and Juslene Chea won the girls’ triple jump (34-8.5).

The boys’ 4x200 relay team of Will Barthel, Muhiz Bada, Tate Songstad and Kneefe took first (1:32.73).
