On March 15th LBCC administrators announced that the college was cutting 11 full time library faculty positions.
This includes all library faculty, computer science and criminal justice programs, and they also plan to reduce the budget for Adult Basic Skills.
LBCC''s full time Faculty Association President Deron Carter and Association President-elect Claire Burke noted they were excluded from all meetings, except a final announcement of cuts despite repeated requests to be included.
The Association has filed a grievance against the college, claiming violations to the contract stating the leaderships has the right “to observe the meeting(s), excluding executive sessions of the Board of Education, at which specific decisions or recommendations regarding reductions in DPD are made.” (Article 11, Section E.)
Additionally, in an interview with the Albany Democrat Herald, LBCC President Lisa Avery reiterated that “the library will remain fully operational.”
Association leadership maintain that to remain in compliance with the contract, LBCC must close the library or at least suspend all faculty library work, including teaching and supporting student research, along with maintaining the catalog and all databases.
