ALBANY, NY - According to the Albany County Sheriff's Office, a man wanted out of Rhode Island and considered a fugitive from justice is now in custody, awaiting extradition.
Sheriff Craig Apple says at about 5:00 p.m. on May 31st, 2023, his deputies spotted a white F-150 pick-up truck on the streets of Albany that had reportedly been stolen out of that city. When those deputies turned on their lights and sirens, they say the truck sped off, prompting the officers to pursue. The Sheriff says the truck stopped only after striking two unoccupied, parked vehicles in the area of S. Main Avenue and Hansen Avenue.
The driver of the truck is being identified as 58-year-old Ike Weems, who the Sheriff says, is wanted out of Rhode Island on felony charges stemming from a burglary.
Locally, Weems is now charged with two felony Criminal possession of Stolen Property counts, as well as misdemeanor charges for Criminal Mischief, Unlawfully Fleeing a Police Officer, and Obstructing Governmental Administration.
He is currently being held in the Albany County Correctional Facility, where he will wait to be sent back to Rhode Island.
