Antonio Brown Teaming With Former Patriots' QB For $150,000?
Antonio Brown can't help himself. So he's enlisting Cam Newton to assist him.
The former New England Patriots receiver, who lasted one game in Foxboro before being released upon a a sexual assault allegation, is attempting to create hype again. Brown, who hasn't played in the NFL since running off the field in the middle of a game for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021, is recruiting the former Pats' quarterback to help him in getting publicity for his National Arena League team, the Albany Empire. The co-owner and player wants Newton, the NFL's 2015 MVP, to return to football for at least one game.
But, in the spirit of Brown's unpredictable actions, he's offering to pay Newton $150,000.
Brown, a four-time first-team All-Pro and Super Bowl champion, recently said he had "been “in contact” with Newton about joining the organization “in some capacity.” He also promised he would make his on-field debut for the Empire last week and - surprise! - that didn't happen.
If Newton accepts Brown's offer, he would allegedly throw a touchdown to the 34-year-old receiver on June 16.
Don't hold your breath.
Indoor football returned to Albany in 2021, with the Empire bearing the same name as the group from the defunct (and supposedly returning) Arena Football League.
In a report from The Times Union, the receiver claimed that he's "100 percent" the owner of the team, though a letter from his representatives claims he has no direct control of the Empire, the two-time defending NAL champions. Instead, the team is instead said to be owned by a foreign trust of which he is a representative.
