What’s that? A bit of sense emanating from Albany? Be still our hearts!
A day after a New York Post poll found that voters in Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie’s district favor tweaks to the bail law, word comes that a compromise may be in the works.
The Legislature is considering adopting Gov. Hochul’s proposal to allow judges to have some discretion for assigning bail.
This is a minor change.
Even if you oppose bail in most cases, you have to admit releasing people who are committing the same crimes again and again and again is insanity.
Forcing judges to impose the “least restrictive” standard in all cases, regardless of circumstance or criminal record, is as rigid and unfair as mandatory minimums were.
Yet progressives appear immune to common sense.
They would rather all criminals be let on the streets no matter how many times they shoplift or carry an illegal gun.
We are heartened that Speaker Heastie is sending signals that this change doesn’t undermine “bail reform,” yet can make New Yorkers safer.
We can only hope this means a more just law is in the works.
Now if they can also see the travesty of trapping kids in failing schools, and allow Hochul’s other proposal — opening more charter schools in New York City — to pass as well.
Do the right thing. Please.
