Summer reading challenge begins in Alabaster
In Alabaster, they’re challenging the community to read this summer. They're kicking off the all-together now reading challenge at the Albert L. Scott Library.
This program will challenge kids, teenagers, and even adults to read throughout the summer for those special prizes. Leaders hope they can use this program to help maintain the children's reading skills they learned over the school year.
Research from public school reviews shows that Alabaster City Schools' reading level is top 20 percent in Alabama. This year they want to raise the bar even higher with this summer program.
“We hope they can have something they can connect to and interest that they have. We can show them where the books are. We can start them in a series of books. That can help their reading level,” Karen Powell said
Now the summer challenge will include workshops, animal visits, musicians, puppet shows and global crafts, culture, and cooking. Educators say adding these different elements will encourage children and even adults to continue their love for reading.
That is why the library is once again offering the free, five-week Summer Challenge – a fun way to encourage reading. Adults can register children, from babies through seniors in high school by using the READsquared app or click here.
