Teen run over, another wounded after shots fired during gathering at closed school’s parking lot

AKRON, Ohio — An 18-year-old male was run over by a car and a 17-year-old male suffered a gunshot wound when shots were fired during a large gathering in the parking lot of a former elementary school.

According to police, the 17-year-old was dropped off by a private vehicle at Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center at about 12:15 a.m. Monday. His injuries are not considered life-threatening. The 18-year-old also was taken to a hospital by a private vehicle. He remains hospitalized with serious injuries, police say.

The teens were injured when shots were fired during a “large party-gathering” at the former Erie Island Elementary School, which is near the intersection of Peckham Street and Cordova Avenue in the West Akron neighborhood.

An unknown suspect shot the 17-year-old, and the driver of the vehicle who ran over the 18-year-old fled the scene, police say. It’s possible the teen was run over inadvertently as people tried to leave the area when shots were fired, police say.

A rifle and several shell casings were found at the scene, but no arrests have been made.
