Kodiak police shift away from 24/7 patrols due to staff shortages
By the end of May, the Kodiak Police Department will no longer be able to sustain patrols 24 hours a day, seven days a week due to steadily declining staffing levels. Police Chief Tim Putney told KMXT in January that this will be the first time since the 1980s that the department has not been able to maintain overnight patrols throughout the whole week.

Kodiak College to change its Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing program
The University of Alaska Anchorage’s nursing program at Kodiak College is undergoing a major overhaul. Students staying on the island will no longer be able to directly enroll in a four-year degree. Students will instead have to enroll in two different programs to get a Bachelor’s of Science.

Spruce Island Farms with the City of Ouzinkie is planning to test the feasibility of growing kelp in Narrow Strait, just offshore from the eastern part of Kodiak Island, between the southern end of Spruce Island and Nelson Island. State salmon forecast projects ‘weak’ pink salmon runs around Kodiak Island this summer
The summer commercial salmon season is less than a month away, and Kodiak Island fishermen can expect a smaller pink harvest and mixed sockeye runs overall compared to last year.
