For those who love the charm of a classic diner with generous portions of comfort food, Lauderdale-By-The-Sea offers some delightful options. Whether it's Lester's or Peter Pan, these spots are local favorites. But if you were planning to visit the beloved Diner By The Sea, you might be in for a surprise. This popular ocean-view diner was recently forced to close its doors temporarily following a state inspection that uncovered some concerning issues.

Diner By The Sea isn't just any eatery—it's been a staple in the community since 1975. This old-school diner, complete with an open kitchen, leather booths, and a cozy community counter, has long been a favorite for both locals and tourists alike. People come not just for the food but for the experience—the friendly service, the retro vibe, and of course, those stunning ocean views.

    What Went Wrong?

Unfortunately, a state inspection on August 2, 2024, revealed some significant issues that led to the temporary closure of Diner By The Sea. The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation noted 14 violations during their visit.

Among the basic violations were things like bathrooms lacking "tight-fitting, self-closing doors," improper thawing of mahi-mahi, dead roaches on the premises, and a soiled floor. These might seem like minor issues, but they add up quickly.

Then there were the intermediate violations. These included the diner’s failure to provide proof of state-approved training for employees and proof that staff had been informed of their responsibilities regarding food-borne illnesses. These kinds of lapses can lead to more serious problems down the line if not addressed.

But the most alarming were the high-priority violations. Inspectors found evidence of rodent activity, with over 40 rodent droppings observed, and a stop-sale order was issued due to improperly thawed food. These issues were serious enough to force the diner to shut down temporarily.

What's Next for Diner By The Sea?

The diner didn’t stay closed for long. Follow-up inspections were conducted on August 3rd and 7th, 2024. By the 7th, while there were still six violations, none were considered an immediate threat to public safety, allowing the diner to reopen.

For now, Diner By The Sea is back in business, but the recent inspection serves as a reminder that even beloved local spots need to stay on top of health and safety standards. For regulars and new visitors alike, it might be worth keeping an eye on future reviews before heading back to enjoy that seaside meal.
