Brush fire in Aiea extinguished, HFD says

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Firefighters worked to contain a brush fire in Aiea that began Saturday night and continued smoldering into the evening.

Officials say the blaze broke out in the mountains above Kaahumanu Street around 7 p.m. and was 50% contained as of 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

However, HFD officials say the fire has burned itself out as of Sunday morning.

HFD says it took ground and aircrews over an hour to access the fire in the hills. Because of the remoteness of the brush fire, a fire line was built around the 50-feet by 50-feet area so that all the contents within the area would burn themselves out.

HFD says firefighters isolated burning material as best as possible to prevent the fire from spreading farther.

Once HFD got to the area Saturday, they found a downed power line and a roughly 50-square-foot area smoldering.

Officials say a visual check by firefighters Sunday morning confirmed that there was no smoke in the area.
