KTVO News has seen multiple social media posts about the poor conditions of some cemeteries in Adair County.
Community members are concerned that they are not being kept up.
Adair County Presiding Commissioner Mark Shahan says the work isn't necessarily the responsibility of the county.
"So every cemetery at one time would have had a board," Shahan said. "If you go to the funeral home directors, they all have maps and contacts of everyone, every cemetery that is in the county. They have to have the information to be able to bury people."
There are 57 cemeteries in Adair County, but county officials only manage one of those.
Shahan told KTVO News that cemetery upkeep is expensive, and the county isn't in a position to take over the other 56 burial grounds.
Families of those who rest in Adair County cemeteries could help bring awareness to the bad conditions that some of them are in.
"I think they could get with some of the funeral homes and get some information on those," Shahan said. "There may be somebody [who] just totally forgot about it. It might generate some interest. If there's a family member living in the county that might step up and take care of some of these cemeteries."
Memorial Day is less than a week away and Shahan says it's important to remember how many veterans are buried in Adair County.
"There's a lot of history in these cemeteries, all the way from Revolutionary War soldiers to the [present]," Shahan added. "There's just a lot of upkeep and a lot to reflect on these people that have been in this county in the past."
