Hitchracks were being installed in locations near the Kirksville public square. Once installed there would be about 3,000 feet of hitchracks for the use of farmers to tie up their horses. The farmer’s agitation for hitchracks started at the time the brick pavement was laid around the public square a few years earlier. John Luther Porter’s early history would not be complete without mention of a very heroic deed for which he is known. In 1860, his older brother, William, had been elected to the office of Circuit Clerk in Adair County. William hired his brother, John L., as Deputy Circuit Clerk. They worked together in this office through 1865, although they also served with the Missouri Militia on the home front during the Civil War, which was going on at this time. Needless to say, their public service was chaotic during this time, particularly when the Confederate recruits commandeered the Adair County Courthouse during the Battle of Kirksville in 1862 and were using the offices within that building from which to shoot at their enemy.
