H.S. softball: Lubbock Monterey gets past Abilene Cooper in 9th

Alexis Lusk’s two-run double snapped a 2-2 tie in the ninth inning, and Anays Perez tossed a two-hitter to lead Lubbock Monterey past Abilene Cooper 5-2 in a District 4-5A softball game Tuesday at Cougar Diamond.

Perez struck out 16 and walked five in throwing all nine innings for the Lady Plainsmen (20-3-1 overall, 5-0 district).

Lusk’s two-out, RBI single staked Monterey to a 1-0 lead in the third, but Cooper answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Nadia Garcia led off with a single, and Gabby Deleon drew a one-out walk. Garcia scored on a two-out wild pitch, and Jazlyn Hatcher followed with an RBI single.

The Lady Plainsmen tied the game in the fourth. Ali Vaquera coaxed a two-out walk, stole second and scored when Taylor Terrazas reached on an error.

It remained a 2-2 game after the regulation seven innings.

Jahlissah Marquez, the Lady Coogs’ starter, gave up two runs on two hits. She struck out two and walked four in four innings. Maddie Fry, who got the loss, surrendered three runs on four hits. She struck out one and walked four in five innings.

Abilene Cooper (5-6, 1-3), which has lost five straight games, plays at Lubbock High on Friday.

Wylie blasts Lubbock High

Jadyn Fernandez, Hanna Hood and Kynslee George drove in two runs each in Wylie’s 13-3 victory Lubbock High in a District 4-5A game at Wylie High School.

All nine Wylie batters in the lineup had a hit and scored a run in the game. All but one had at least an RBI.

Wylie (17-5, 3-1) remained a game back in the loss column behind front-running Monterey. Lubbock High (7-12, 2-2) dropped to fourth place.

Hood tripled and hit a solo homer, while George had two doubles. Rylee Moore (3-for-3), Mycala Reed (2-for-3), Kat Martinez, Cameron Gregory and Halli Russell each had an RBI. Kandance Gilcrease also had a hit and scored a run.

Russell got the win, allowing three runs on two hits. She struck out six and walked six in four innings. Moore pitched the final two innings, giving up a hit and striking out two.

The game was stopped after six innings on the 10-run rule, after Hood opened the bottom of the inning with a solo homer.

AHS routs Coronado

At Lubbock, Kinzley Cantu hit a pair of two-run home runs and finished with five RBIs as Abilene High blasted Lubbock Coronado 14-4 in a District 4-5A game.

Avah Reyes got the win in the circle for the Lady Eagles (19-4, 3-2). She allowed four runs on six hits. Reyes struck out seven and walked three.

Cantu hit a two-run homer two batters into the game. The Lady Eagles added seven runs in the second inning and three more in the third. Cantu got her second homer in the fourth inning for a 14-0 lead.

Hayleigh Bleisch hit a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth for the Lady Mustangs (6-6, 0-4). She also hit a solo shot in the fifth – just two batters after Aryah Barrera hit a two-run shot.

But Reyes struck out the final two batters to end the game on the 10-run rule.

Marissa Cardenas went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Amyah Starks, Tea Jimenez, Emeri Burnett and Germani Williams each drove in a run.

AHS, which has won two straight games, plays Lubbock-Cooper on Friday in Abilene.
