Florida Suspected of Secretly Flying 16 Migrants to California: Did Governor DeSantis Break the Law?

On Friday, 16 migrants arrived in California and they were from Texas. This caused some concern and questions from California officials as the arrival of the migrants was a complete surprise. Someone had chartered the flight to bring the migrants from Texas to California.

Now signs are pointing to the Florida government for orchestrating this flight.

Florida previously flew migrants from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard last September. After the flight, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was sued.

Since then Florida approved a law legally allowing the governor to transport migrants to sanctuary states.

After California had time to review the flight documents of the 16 migrants, Attorney General Rob Bonta said:

"While this is still under investigation, we can confirm these individuals were in possession of documentation purporting to be from the government of the state of Florida."

He added:

“While we continue to collect evidence, I want to say this very clearly: State-sanctioned kidnapping is not a public policy choice, it is immoral and disgusting.”

Governor Gavin Newsom said they are reviewing if any laws were broken. This could be important as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is running for President.

After the migrants arrived, Governor Newsom was welcoming and said in a statement:

"We are working closely with the Mayor's office, along with local and nonprofit partners to ensure the people who have arrived are treated with respect and dignity, and get to their intended destination as they pursue their immigration cases."

Since Title 42 ended on May 11, the arrival of migrants has decreased. This could be from immigration policies President Joe Biden passed this year.

As Florida passed a law allowing DeSantis to fly migrants to sanctuary cities, we’ll have to see what California can do, if anything at all.
