Missing white women syndrome is a phrase that was coined by the late journalist Gwen Ifill, to bring to light the biases of media coverage as it relates to missing person cases. In history and unfortunately even today, you have media outlets that will only cover cases that involve white missing persons rather than black/colored persons. Gwen Ifill wanted to bring awareness to this fact in the hopes that media outlets would make attempts to show equality when it comes to their coverage of missing persons cases.

On July 25, 2023, at about 12:40 a.m., a group of juveniles, ages ranging from 12 years old to 16 years old, arrived at a Shell Gas Station near St. Clair Avenue and East 140th Street in Cleveland, Ohio. The juveniles, it was later discovered, arrived at the gas station in three (verified) stolen vehicles: a 2020 Hyundai Tucson, a 2020 Kia Sportage, and a 2015 Hyundai Sonata.

In 2019 between September 7 and September 21; two men and two women was found inside a residence near East 144th Street and Kinsman Road in Cleveland, Ohio. Sources reported that the residence on East 144th Street and Kinsman Road was abandoned and was frequently used for drug activity. It is noted that the four victims were staying at the residence. Later the victims were identified as 19-year-old Aiyanna Quitman, 18-year-old Jazmyne Lawson, 23-year-old Christopher Monroe, and 20-year-old Dejuan Willis. It was discovered that Lawson was five and a half months pregnant at the time of her death. As of today, Terrell Silver, a 34-year-old man, has been indicted for the murders of the four victims found in the abandoned residence. It is alleged that Terrell Silver shot all four victims multiple times as they were lying down on two mattresses on the floor, Silver later fled the scene. The grand jury indicted Silver on fifteen counts of aggravated murder, one count of aggravated robbery, one count of having a weapon under disability, and one count of tampering with evidence. The indictment states that Silver committed the murders while attempting or committing a theft. One of the aggravated murder charges is for the unlawful termination of Lawson’s pregnancy. The Cleveland Homicide Initiative, a group composed of other law enforcement agencies, used previously gathered information, DNA, and other resources to link Silver to the crime. Terrell Silver will be arraigned at the Cuyahoga County Justice Center at a later date. Please follow this platform to learn the latest news on this case. A shooting early today, Monday July 24, 2023, where one person was injured and another person was left dead, happen Downtown Cleveland. According to police the first shooting happened around 1 am on July 24, 2023, near East 9th Street and Bolivar Road, a 25-year-old man was shot and killed inside his car. At this time the identity of the victim has not been released. The second shooting happened about an hour later on East 9th Street and Prospect Avenue. Twenty-seven children have been reported missing between May 2, 2023, and May 16, 2023, in the city of Cleveland, Ohio. According to sources the majority of these cases are classified as runaways, however, no information regarding the children’s gender, race, and area that they live in was provided in the report. These factors are important because, according to a 2022 article in USA Today, it was stated that black children that are missing are usually classified as having run away, and because of that no efforts to locate them (issuing of the Amber Alert) are made for those children.

On August 10, 2020, in Durham, NC, an 18-year-old black male, Syncere Kalif Burrell, was found unresponsive in a Honda Accord at Lincoln Street near Linwood Avenue. Syncere was transported to the hospital where he later died. Syncere’s death was the 3rd deadly shooting within 15 hours in Durham, North Carolina. Joshua Lindsey, 21 years old, was found dead next to a crashed SUV about a mile west of downtown in the early morning hours, and at 6 am 48-year-old Reginald Bowling was found dead near Liberty and Elm Streets.

Xylazine or known on the streets as “Tranq” is rapidly spreading in Ohio, seen mixed along with other drugs such as heroin and fentanyl. The United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) reported that there has been a sudden increase of xylazine being found mixed with the deadly opioid, fentanyl. According to reports xylazine makes fentanyl and heroin deadlier. Xylazine is being used as a cutting agent /adulterant, often mixed with fentanyl and heroin.
