Final Countdown: Popular Minnesota Store to Close After 50 Years. Don't Miss Liquidation Sale

Fifty Years of Memories: Minnesota's Popular Local Store Begins Its Final Sale Week!

Disappointing news for Minneapolis shoppers with popular local outdoor gear store Midwest Mountaineering entering its final week of business.

The store which opened in Minneapolis in 1969, can no longer compete with online websites and larger chains such as Dick's Sporting Goods and REI.

"Midwest's style of retailing is under intense pressure. Big box and online shopping, including direct selling from manufacturers, is on a steady rise and continues to outpace traditional specialty stores like Midwest. We've had to compete with screen time and with less overall passion for the outdoors" Midwest Mountaineering owner Rod Johnson

A final liquidation sale is running with between 30 and 75% off goods, with Sunday, October 8, marking the end of the store's 53-year history.

"Midwest Mountaineering has been the focus of my life for the last 53 years. We've had a great run, helping over a million customers and friends get great gear and clothing and have fun outdoors. We've been fortunate to have excellent relationships with all our vendors, customers, staff and neighbors over the years, and we're grateful for those relationships." It has been a tough year for retail businesses. Even large chains have struggled to compete online. Several have filed for bankruptcy and closed stores, including Bed Bath & Beyond, Tuesday Morning, Party City, Christmas Tree Shops, David's Bridal, and Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams.

Even retail giants such as Walmart have been forced to close stores.
