Traffic alert: Crash causes backup on southbound I-81 into Syracuse
Salina, N.Y. — Traffic is backed up on southbound Interstate 81 into Syracuse on Monday after a crash. A car struck a person around 10:50 a.m. in Salina just north of Exit 25A (Thruway), according to Trooper Jennifer Jiron, a spokesperson for the State Police. The person was in the roadway to retrieve a canoe that blew off their vehicle, she said.
Weather alert for thunderstorms in New York Monday afternoon
The National Weather Service issued a weather alert at 12:05 p.m. on Monday for thunderstorms until 1:15 p.m. for Seneca, Cayuga and Tompkins counties. "Gusty showers and storms west of I-81 will continue a fast-moving eastward track across Central NY. Strong to severe storms are expected to develop in the afternoon, and last through late evening. Primary threats include wind gusts in excess of 60 mph, hail, and the possibility of an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out," according to the weather service.
Man hit trooper with car door in Syracuse after being asked to pull over, troopers say
Syracuse, N.Y. — A man hit a state trooper with his car door Sunday morning on Syracuse’s South Side after he was asked to pull over, troopers said. Trooper John Zayas Jr. requested the man, Mekhi A. Flagg, 26, pull over after seeing he was on his cell phone, Trooper Jennifer Jiron, a spokesperson for the State Police, said in a news release. Zayas was running an occupant safety checkpoint around 10 a.m. Sunday at East Calthrop Avenue and the Interstate 81 northbound ramp, she said.

Driver 'blacked out' in Susquehanna crash, state police say
HARFORD, Pa. — A New York man lost control of his SUV and crashed Sunday on Interstate 81 in Susquehanna County, state police at Gibson said. Troopers said 28-year-old Edgar Ekure, of Baldwinsville, New York, "blacked out" while driving north through Harford Township just before 3 p.m. and crossed over into the southbound lanes. His Jeep Compass clipped a Subaru Impreza, which caused the Subaru to lose traction and hit the guardrail.
