Wildlife West Nature Park announces passing of Koshari the black bear
EDGEWOOD, N.M. (KRQE) – Wildlife West Nature Park in Edgewood announced that its beloved black bear Koshari passed away. Koshari was over 20 years old and was an educational ambassador at the zoo. He arrived at the park in August 2005 when he was captured by New Mexico Game and Fish officers at Navajo Lake in northern New Mexico.
Albuquerque teenager sentenced to 54 years for 2022 fatal park shooting
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A judge sentenced a 17-year-old boy from Albuquerque, which will lead to nearly four decades of incarceration. Michael Salinas Jr., 17, will serve 38 years for murder after a fatal shooting at Westgate Park in February 2022. The judge suspended 16 years of the murder sentence, according to Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman.

A drag performance at a New Mexico high school prom night has resulted in outrage, death threats against the performer, and more. Some parents of Atrisco Heritage Academy High School students were upset after the April 20 end-of-year dance after learning that it involved a performance by local drag artist Mythica Sahreen, whose real name is Dylan Payan. Albuquerque Public Schools confirmed that the school’s principal was replaced, and several employees were placed on administrative leave as they investigated the event.

APD and RRPD SWATs team up in RR arrest of juvenile
A suspect in a firearm incident in Downtown Albuquerque was arrested at his home in Rio Rancho April 30 by a combination effort of Albuquerque SWAT and Rio Rancho SWAT. "Our detectives were investigating a juvenile who threatened several individuals with a firearm outside a charter school in downtown Albuquerque earlier in April. Detectives coordinated with APD SWAT, Rio Rancho PD and Rio Rancho SWAT to arrest the suspect for his warrant outside his home in Rio Rancho. He was booked at JDC. Detectives executed a warrant on the residence and seized fentanyl, firearms parts, ammunition and cellphones. A search warrant will be executed on the vehicle to seize his firearm," APD SWAT reported.
