Fire destroys Florence residence
Fire personnel had to revisit a house fire in Florence a few times April 19th due to roofing additions that trapped heat inside the components. Western Lane Fire and EMS responded to the area of Shorecrest Drive and North Lane, north of Florence at about 10:25 a.m. to find a double-wide mobile home heavily involved.
N. 7th Street & Ivy Avenue Road Closure
The City of Coos Bay is in the process of upgrading the existing wastewater treatment plant, located at 680 Ivy Street. The contractor performing the work is McClure and Sons Incorporated. The construction activities will require the closure of N. 7th Street and Ivy Street from Hemlock Avenue to the intersection at 6th Street. The duration of the closure will be dependent on the work schedule for this phase of construction and is expected to extend as long as six months. It is anticipated for the road closure to begin the second week of May and continue through October of 2024. Brian A. Springer (40) sentenced to 100 months in prison
On April 19th 2024 Brian A. Springer (40) appeared in circuit court in Coquille to accept a plea deal for an incident which occurred in Coos Bay on October 27th 2023. The plea agreement was negotiated by Deputy District Attorney John Blanc on behalf of the victims in the case and the state of Oregon. It should be noted the victims completely supported the plea agreement and are released to put this incident behind them. Brian A. Accident takes out stoplights at 126/ 101
At about 2:20 p.m., a vehicle took out a pole at Highway 126 and US 101 and left the area, leaving the stoplights at the intersection flashing red. Police and OSP were on scene and investigating. As of :245 p.m., drivers are subjected to 4-way-stop conditions until the lights are repaired.
Poacher faces potential judgment of over $13 million for senseless act
A 20-year-old man suspected of killing nearly 18,000 young salmon at an Oregon fish hatchery was charged with burglary, criminal trespass and criminal mischief, and will be charged with poaching as well. The suspect faces a huge financial penalty and possibly a lifetime fishing ban. The chinook salmon died after a gallon of bleach was poured into one of the four rearing tanks at the hatchery, according to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.
