Nick Begich takes break from campaign trail, tracks and bags a Kodiak bear
After a successful convention with Alaska Republicans, congressional candidate Nick Begich changed clothes and headed to the airport, destination: Kodiak. From there, Vertigo Air transported Begich to the Uyak Bay area, where he had a tag to hunt Kodiak brown bear. He was accompanied by friend Pat McCollum of Wasilla, husband of Mat-Su School Board member Kathy McCollum.
MV Tustumena spending extra time in the shipyard, causes ferry service delays to Kodiak Island
The Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) announced Wednesday, April 24 that the MV Tustumena ferry will be delayed coming out of its annual maintenance or overhaul. That means the earliest it will sail to Kodiak Island is the evening of May 9, when it’s scheduled to stop in Port Lions and Ouzinkie as well as Kodiak, departing Homer at 8:45 p.m. Originally it was expected to be back in service by the end of this month, April 30.

Flooding concerns in Kodiak, as heavy rain inundates the island
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - A flood watch and flood advisory remain in effect for the city of Kodiak and surrounding areas through Saturday afternoon. Well over 6 inches of rain has fallen on the island, with an additional two-plus inches looking likely through Saturday. The recent heavy rains have contributed to landslides, with at least one structure damaged but no injuries. Additional landslides could continue to be a concern, with likely flooding near rivers and streams. Make sure to stay safe in or around steep terrain.

Rain returns to Southcentral, with wintry weather continuing out west
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - The sunny weather for much of Southcentral is coming to an end, as rain and clouds are moving back into the gulf coast region. An area of low pressure situated southwest of Kodiak will be the big driver in our weather pattern over the next few days. Strong southeasterly flow on the eastern side of the low is slamming into Kodiak, where up to 5-plus inches of rain looks likely by week’s end. Kodiak could initially see some wintry mix, but with warmer temperatures streaming into the Gulf of Alaska, a quick changeover to rain will occur. Expect rain to be heavy at times, with winds gusting upwards of 45 mph. The heavy rain will likely lead to ponding, as the ground is still cold and not prone to soaking up the water as quickly.
