Three rodeo contestants and a terrific individual day on the track earned the Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Wyoming WyoPreps Athlete of the Week awards for April 24, 2024. The girls’ honor was shared between rodeo cowgirl Kloe Nichols and Lusk senior track athlete Melody ZumBrunnen. The boys’ award went to rodeo cowboy team ropers Cam Johnson and Cael Espenscheid. They were chosen for their wonderful performances during the week of April 15 through April 20, 2024.

Penfield jumps into final RMAC championships
CHADRON, NEBRASKA – Five years after graduating with the Niobrara County High School (NCHS) Class of 2019, Alec Penfield is winding down his time as a college student-athlete. The senior high jumper at Chadron State College has been among the best in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference since he arrived on campus, and with the final few weeks approaching fast, had a few moments to reminisce.

LUSK – Last week at the LEMS commons, the Niobrara County High School boys basketball team held their post season awards banquet. Head coach Ed Fullmer, along with assistants Andie Hubbard and Reece Andre handed out a dozen varsity letters and a pair of white letters for seniors Cory Bruegger and Camden Rose.
Williams throws hat into state political ring
NIOBRARA - Native Wyoming rancher J.D. Williams is throwing his hat into the political arena with his eyes firmly set on Wyoming House of Representative District Two. Williams originally hails from Saratoga, Wyoming, but he has made a name for himself locally. Niobrara County residents know him as a rancher and a cowboy who has spent the last three decades guiding cows through their annual production cycle. Williams believes that the cowboy and ranching professions have sufficiently prepared him to make the leap into Wyoming politics.
FBLA makes NCSD#1 proud
LUSK - The Niobrara County School District #1 school board met on April 10 for their monthly meeting. During the meeting, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) team gave a brief presentation about their individual and team performances at the state competition. This is the largest team that FBLA has ever had to qualify for nationals. Each member of the FBLA team introduced themselves and gave a brief synopsis of what they competed in. They asked the school board if they would help with a donation to go towards their trip to Orlando, Florida from June 25 to July 3. The team has already prepared by doing a lot of fundraising this year. Some of the fundraisers include Career Technical Education (CTE) and Fine Arts Night on Wednesday, April 17 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at NCHS. Tickets will cost $12 for adults and $7 for children. FBLA team will also be hosting a Mustard Seed Dinner at St. George’s Episcopal church from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on May 8. They are also working with the Niobrara Alumni Golf Tournament.

LUSK - Saturday may have been cold, but that didn’t stop three different age groups of Lusk children from descending upon North Park for a belated Easter Egg hunt. Originally scheduled for March 30, the hunt had to be rescheduled for April 6 because of snow. While Saturday’s weather conditions were only slightly better, they were still favorable enough to accommodate a crowd of youthful egg hunters.
