One arrested after high-risk search warrant served near rural Kansas school
WILLIAMSBURG, Kan. (KCTV) - One man is behind bars after he allegedly refused to exit a home for an “extended period of time” near a rural Kansas school. The Franklin County, Kan., Sheriff’s Office says that on Friday morning, April 26, law enforcement officials were sent to the 100 block of E. Warren St. in Williamsburg with a high-risk search warrant in hand. The warrant was issued in connection to a Northeast Kansas Drug Taskforce investigation which remains ongoing.
Fire destroys barn built in 1882
A late-night fire on the evening of Thursday, April 18, destroyed a barn north of Fontana that was built in 1882, but no injuries were reported. Firefighters from Fontana, Osawatomie, Paola and Louisburg were dispatched to the barn fire at 20860 W. 363rd St. north of Fontana at 11:46 p.m. April 18, according to a report from Miami County Emergency Management Coordinator Mark Whelan.
Bourbon County Garden Club Plant Sale and Garden Contest Is Announced
The Bourbon County Garden Club will hold its annual plant sale on the opening day of the Downtown Farmers’ Market, Saturday, May 4, from 8 a.m. until noon. Proceeds from the sale support beautification efforts throughout the community. The garden club partners with Tri Valley Developmental Services to sell a wide variety of plants, all of which are geared to our area’s weather challenges. Club members offer plants freshly dug from their own gardens, plus unique plant-filled pots. Tri Valley provides annuals, herbs, and both blooming and foliage hanging baskets. Among the variety of annuals this year are geraniums, calibrachoa, and begonias which are in bloom and ideal for Mothers’ Day gifts. Knowledgeable members and Master Gardeners will be available to offer advice and answer questions about plants during the sale.
Two firefighters suffer minor injuries while battling house fire
Two Osawatomie firefighters recently suffered minor injuries when a firefighter fell through a floor while battling a house fire near Fontana. Firefighters from Osawatomie, Fontana, Paola and Louisburg were dispatched to a house fire at 38519 Hedge Lane near Fontana at 3:58 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, according to a report from Miami County Emergency Management Coordinator Mark Whelan.
Civics Engagement Focus Group Engages Students at Allen
On April 9, 2024, Allen Community College welcomed a guest speaker from the Kansas Apple Seed. The speaker from Kansas Appleseed led a focus group on civic Engagement with about twenty anonymous students in attendance. Kansas Appleseed is a state advocacy organization that involves civic engagement and focuses on 3 different subjects thriving (SNAP and children hunger), youth and adult justice, and foster care.
