Iconic Traverse City Landmark Gets an Upgrade
At times, the burden was “palpable” for Joe Frost. Frost, 44, is a retailer who sells upscale shoes and apparel at Robert Frost Quality, the Front Street shop he and his dad opened in 2008. And while he’s spent many years juggling the various tasks that pile up for a small business owner, one job in particular seemed to carry a bit more weight.
Seinfeld movie “Unfrosted” loosely based on longtime Glen Arbor resident, Pop-Tart man Bill Post
Unfrosted, the comedic farce directed by Jerry Seinfeld which launched on Netflix Friday, has a Glen Arbor connection—sort of. The film, which stars Seinfeld as well as Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Hugh Grand and Amy Schumer, is (very) loosely based on the true story of how the Pop-Tart toaster pastries were created in 1963 in Battle Creek, Michigan. Billed as a “tale of ambition, betrayal, sugar, and menacing milkmen,” Unfrosted features rival companies Kellogg and Post going to war with each other over cereal.
A Decade On Two Wheels: 10 Years Of Norte
By its own accounting, Norte Youth Cycling in 2023 tallied 1,393 program registrations, $24,430 in scholarships, 798 bikes lent out through its bike library program, and some 3,000-plus community members “impacted in programs and outreach.” 2024 marks another notable number for the cycling powerhouse: 10 years since it officially organized as a nonprofit. Norte will celebrate that milestone on Friday, May 17 with “A Decade in Motion,” a 5:30-9pm event at the City Opera House that will feature “gratitude, giveaways, and an original feature film created by local videographer, Mark Goethel.” Ahead of the event and the 10-year anniversary, The Ticker connected with Jill Sill, Norte’s executive director, for a look at the nonprofit’s past, present, and future.
Traverse City road construction moves forward with help from a local construction company
TRAVERSE CITY — Some good news as the disruptive construction project on the main artery in the downtown area of Traverse City is making some major progress. Stage one of phase one of the Grandview Parkway/Front Street construction project in Traverse City is almost complete. The popular route that has more than 30,000 people driving through on any given day is getting a major overhaul for the first time since 1956 to the tune of $24.7 million. The construction that started back in March has been disruptive to drivers and impacted area businesses along the way, keeping foot traffic away as people try to avoid the area.
Hook & Hunting: Chinook salmon smolts placed in the Boardman River
TRAVERSE CITY — The Northwest Michigan Fishing Club and the DNR were at the Boardman River in Traverse City on Thursday to put around 100,000 Chinook salmon in the water. The fish will remain in cages to get acclimated to the water and will then be released when the water temperature reaches 60 degrees. It also imprints on their internal GPS so they know to come back to the area in two years to be caught, which keeps the region’s fish economy going strong. “First, it’s community building,” said NWMI Fishing Club Secretary Tim Hossack. “All these businesses along front street restaurants, gas stations, party stores, you name it. They count on the tourist dollar and the fisherman dollar to come in and fish for these salmon in an effort to keep the salmon fishery strong and to get a better return on fish. That’s why we do it. And we think it’s worth the effort.” Salmon were also released back in 2022 and those fish will be making an appearance in the area within the next couple months.
