Overturned big rig crash on Yolo Causeway leads to hours of traffic delays on freeways
CHOICE HIMSELF. RIGHT NOW, A TRAFFIC MESS ON INTERSTATES, MULTIPLE INTERSTATES IN THE SACRAMENTO REGION. AND THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON ALL DAY LONG. THANKS FOR JOINING US. I’M TY STEELE. I’M LISA GONZALEZ. WE’VE BEEN TRACKING THIS SINCE IT HAPPENED. 4:00 THIS MORNING IS WHEN IT ALL BEGAN. A CRASH DURING THE MORNING DRIVE. A BIG RIG FLIPPED ON ITS SIDE IN THE ON THE YOLO CAUSEWAY RIGHT AROUND FIVE, 5:00 THIS MORNING, TOOK A COUPLE HOURS TO CLEAR THAT. BUT THE BIG RIG WENT INTO A CONSTRUCTION ZONE, CONSTRUCTION THAT WAS ALREADY HAPPENING ON THE CAUSEWAY. IT BROKE THROUGH BARRIERS, WENT INTO A DITCH AND THIS IS WHERE THEY PULLED IT OUT. THAT WAS ABOUT 7 A.M. WELL, NOW HERE WE ARE, 4 P.M. AND WE’RE STILL SEEING THE IMPACTS OF THAT BIG RIG. SO NOW WE ARE STILL SEEING THE TRAFFIC TIE UPS AND THE BACKUPS IN ALL OF THE FREEWAYS ALL AROUND DOWNTOWN SACRAMENTO AND IN WEST SACRAMENTO. HERE’S A LIVE LOOK FROM THE CALTRANS CAMERA. THIS IS ENTERPRISE IN AT 80. AND YOU CAN SEE LOOK AT THAT, ALMOST A STANDSTILL ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE THERE. REALLY, JUST STOP AND GO. PEOPLE HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH THIS ALL DAY LONG. WHAT A NIGHTMARE. IF WE COULD TAKE OUR TRAFFIC CAMERA RIGHT NOW TO SHOW YOU THE DIGITAL VERSION OF THIS BACKUP, YOU CAN SEE THAT LONG BACKUP ON 80 WHEN 50 TURNS INTO 80 ON THE CAUSEWAY HERE IN WEST SACRAMENTO IS WHERE THIS ALL HAPPENED AT HARBOR AVENUE. IF WE COULD TAKE THAT NEXT TRAFFIC MAP HERE. LET ME BRING THAT UP FOR YOU RIGHT HERE. TAKES A MINUTE AND WE’LL SHOW YOU THE TRAFFIC CAMERA NOT POPPING UP FOR US RIGHT NOW, BUT ESSENTIALLY, THERE WE GO. TRAFFIC IS AT A STANDSTILL THIS IS AT HARBOR AVENUE ON 50. AS YOU ENTER THE CAUSEWAY AND YOU CAN SEE BIG RIGS, VEHICLES JUST TRYING TO GET HOME. EVERYBODY JUST AT A STANDSTILL AT THIS POINT IN TIME. AND TY, NOT ONLY I MEAN, I WAS CAUGHT IN THIS EARLIER TODAY, BUT THIS WEST SAC BACKUP THAT GOES ALL THE WAY BACK INTO THE W/X FREEWAY PORTION, WHICH THEN IN TURN AFFECTS PEOPLE GETTING ON FROM I-5 99, CAPITAL CITY FREEWAY AND ALSO WESTBOUND 50. AND IT’S BEEN LIKE THIS ALL DAY LONG. THE MAN WITH A LOT OF INSIGHT INTO EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED TODAY, DENNIS KEATON WITH CALTRANS JOINS US LIVE RIGHT NOW. DENNIS, I KNOW THIS WAS NOT A PART OF THE PLAN AND I TRIED TO EXPLAIN IT BRIEFLY, BUT WE KNOW AND YOU GAVE US A HEADS UP THAT YOU WERE GOING TO START VERY IMPORTANT CONSTRUCTION PROJECT ON THE CAUSEWAY THAT STARTED, WHAT, SUNDAY? DENNIS YEAH, THAT’S CORRECT. THE YOLO 80 PAVEMENT REHABILITATION PROGRAM STARTED AND PRIMARILY WAS BEGINNING ON THE SHOULDER. SO WHAT EVIDENTLY HAPPENED IS THAT LAST NIGHT WHEN THEY WERE WRAPPING THINGS UP AND GETTING READY TO OPEN UP THAT NUMBER THREE LANE, GETTING READY FOR THE MORNING COMMUTE, I CAN’T REALLY TALK ABOUT THE INVESTIGATION INTO WHAT THE CAUSE IS, BUT FOR AN UNKNOWN REASON. THE DRIVER OF A BIG RIG TRAVELED INTO THE CONSTRUCTION ZONE GOING PAST THE BARRELS AND THEN ROLLING THE BIG RIG INTO THE WHICH WAS THE CONSTRUCTION ZONE. AND AS YOU STATED, IT WAS ALREADY TAKING SOME TIME. AND THEY HAD TO WAIT BEFORE WE COULD GET THAT SCENE CLEARED. WELL, THE A FIELD DECISION WAS MADE BY CALTRANS IN THE CONTRACTOR THAT FOR SAFETY’S SAKE, THAT MAYBE THEY SHOULD SHUT IT BACK DOWN AGAIN ON THE NUMBER THREE AND MAKE SURE THAT SHOULDER IS SECURED SO THAT WE DON’T HAVE ANOTHER BIG RIG OR ANOTHER VEHICLE POSSIBLY GETTING TRAPPED. AND SO THAT DECISION HAS BEEN MADE THERE AT ABOUT 50% COMPLETE IN IN FILLING IN THAT SHOULDER. A CONSERVATIVE ESTIMATE OF TIME OF WHEN THIS IS GOING TO BE COMPLETED IS GOING TO BE AROUND 6 TO 7:00 TONIGHT. SO THAT’S WHAT WE’RE GOING ON. AND IT WAS MORE OF A JUDGMENT CALL FOR SAFETY REASONS. SO AN ADJUSTMENT WAS MADE AFTER THAT BIG RIG CRASHED. AND THAT’S WHAT WE’RE DEALING WITH RIGHT NOW. AND 7 P.M. IS HOPEFULLY WHEN THAT WILL START TO CLEAR UP. AND MY UNDERSTANDING THAT CORRECTLY. THAT IS CORRECT. GOOD NEWS IS THAT THERE WAS NO FATALITIES OR INJURIES INVOLVED IN THAT BIG RIG CRASH. THE BAD NEWS IS WE’VE GOT SOME MAJOR INCONVENIENCE FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE THAT ARE TRYING TO GET HOME AND ENJOY THE REST OF THEIR AFTERNOON. AND THIS IS WHAT WE’RE DEALING WITH RIGHT NOW. YEAH, THIS WAS NOT A PART OF THE ORIGINAL PLAN. WE KNEW THERE WERE GOING TO BE SOME SLOWDOWNS IN ONE LANE, BUT NOW IT’S ALSO THE NUMBER THREE LANE THAT’S CLOSED. SO YOU JUST GOT THE NUMBER ONE, THE NUMBER TWO, THE FAR LEFT LANES OPEN RIGHT NOW, WHICH IS NOT A LOT. IT’S A VERY TIGHT BOTTLENECK. SO, DENNIS KEATON, THANKS FOR EXPLAINING EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED AND KIND OF AN UNFORTUNATE SERIES OF EVENTS. BUT THIS CONSTRUCTION WORK IS GOING TO BE GOING ON FOR SOME TIME. SO YEAH, WE JUST NEED TO BE AWARE OF THAT.

Overturned big rig crash on Yolo Causeway leads to hours of traffic delays on freeways
An overturned big rig crash that happened early Tuesday morning has led to significant backups on Interstate 80 and other freeways in the Sacramento area all day.The crash happened on the Yolo Causeway on I-80 when the big rig hit a work area around 5 a.m. and blocked westbound lanes. Dennis Keaton with Caltrans said crews had been working on a planned project at night on the shoulder and were getting ready to open the lane for the morning commute when "for an unknown reason the driver of the big rig traveled into the construction zone" past warning barrels and crashed into the site. At first, two lanes were closed as crews worked to upright the vehicle. The roadway was cleared but delays have remained as Caltrans kept a third lane closed to continue to fill in the shoulder. "A field decision was made by Caltrans and the contractor for safety’s sake that maybe they should shut it back down again and make sure that shoulder is secure so we don’t have another big rig or another vehicle getting trapped," Keaton said. At 6:32 p.m., Caltrans tweeted that all lanes reopened on the Yolo Causeway. In the meantime, the traffic delays have slowed not only parts of I-80 but have had a domino effect on I-5 and Highway 50.Keaton said the big rig driver wasn't injured but the "bad news is we have some major inconvenience for people that are trying to get home and enjoy the rest of their afternoon."
