RIGHT. CHANDI SO THE PARK REOPENING JUST TODAY FOR A PRIVATE EVENT FOR HIGHMARK EMPLOYEES ONLY. AND TONIGHT, AS THE CROWDS WERE LEAVING THE PARK, WE WATCHED AS MORE FIRE TRUCKS WERE STILL HEADING IN. WEST MIFFLIN FIRE CHIEF RON LOWE TELLS ME THAT SMOKE WAS COMING FROM A MANHOLE. HIS CREWS DETERMINED IT WAS AN UNDERGROUND ELECTRIC HIGH VOLTAGE LINE UNDERNEATH THOMASTOWN. HE SAID KENNYWOOD IMMEDIATELY ISOLATED THE LINE AND SHUT IT DOWN. FORTUNATELY, NO ONE WAS HURT. A VIEWER SHARING THESE PHOTOS OF THE UNUSUAL SIGHT OF FIRE TRUCKS ON THE KENNYWOOD PATHS. A HIGHMARK EMPLOYEE VISITING THE PARK TONIGHT DESCRIBED SEEING THE FIRE TRUCKS ROLLING INTO THE PARK WITHOUT SIRENS, UNAWARE. AT THAT POINT Y FIRE CREWS WERE THERE. HEATHER STORM TELLS ME ONCE SHE NOTICED RIDES BEING SHUT DOWN, SHE MADE HER WAY TO THE EXIT. WE WERE IN LINE FOR A RIDE AND THEY JUST SAID, HEY, THE RIDE’S GOING TO BE STOPPED FOR A LITTLE BIT. YOU CAN STICK AROUND AND WAIT IF YOU WANT OR YOU CAN JUST LEAVE. SO WE GOT OUT OF THAT LINE, WENT TO ANOTHER RIDE, AND THEN THEY SHUT THAT ONE DOWN. AT THE TIME, WE DIDN’T SMELL SMOKE OR SEE ANYTHING, REALLY. JUST JUST THE FIRE TRUCKS COMING IN. AND SO EVERYBODY JUST KIND OF STARTED LEAVING THE PARK BECAUSE NONE OF THE RIDES WERE OPEN. AND IT JUST SEEMED TOO LIKE A GOOD TIME TO LEAVE. AND AS GUESTS WERE LEAVING, STORM TELLS ME THAT THEY WERE GIVEN A COMPLIMENTARY TICKET TO COME BACK TO KENNYWOOD’S PHANTOM FALL FEST, WHICH A SPOKESPER

Rides at Kennywood stopped Sunday night when fire crews responded to an electrical fire.West Mifflin Fire Chief Ron Lowe said smoke was coming from a manhole. His crews determined it was an underground high-voltage electrical line under Thomas Town.Lowe said the line was immediately isolated. He said no one was hurt.The park is currently closed for the regular season, but it was open for a private event for Highmark employees on Sunday.Highmark employee Heather Storm described seeing the fire truck rolling into the park without sirens. At that point, they were unaware of why fire crews were there.Storm said once she noticed rides being shut down, she made her way to the exit.“We were in line for a ride, and they just said that the ride’s going to be stopped for a little bit. ‘You can stick around and wait if you want, or you can leave.’ So, we got out of that line and went to another ride, and then they shut that one down,” Storm said. “At the time, we didn’t smell smoke or see anything, really, just the fire trucks coming in, and so, everybody just kind of started leaving the park because none of the rides were open and it just seemed like a good time to leave.”Storm said as they were leaving the park, each guest was given a complimentary ticket to return to Kennywood for Phantom Fall Fest. Kennywood is still set to reopen for Phantom Fall Fest on Friday, Sept. 22.
