Barn destroyed, smoke seen for miles in Southwest Michigan fire

VAN BUREN COUNTY, MI – A barn was destroyed in a fire Tuesday.

Thick black smoke could be seen in downtown Kalamazoo just before noon, March 7. The smoke was from nearly 12 miles away, at a barn fire on 38th Avenue, between 23rd and 24th streets, in Van Buren County.

Fire departments are still on scene as of 1:30 p.m., working on overhaul and ensuring the fire is out, the Mattawan Fire District said.

No one has been injured in the fire.

Tanker trucks from neighboring fire departments responded to fire, including Paw Paw Fire Department, Alamo Township Fire and Gobles Fire Department

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Mattawan fire said.
