SAN ANTONIO - Firefighters battled a massive fire at a Southeast Side pawn shop for over an hour before they finally got it under control.
The fire started just before 2:30 a.m. Friday at the EZ Pawn Shop off Goliad Road near Southeast Military Drive.
Fire officials said accessibility to the inside of the building was an issue. The pawn shop is located in between two gas stations and firefighters made sure to keep the fire contained and not spread.
After about an hour, flames could be seen towering over the pawn shop, as firefighters took a defensive position to battle the blaze.
Due to the massive fire, the battalion chief made the decision not to send his firefighters inside the building due to the building being unstable. Moments later, part of the roof collapsed.
Fire investigators said that a reported dumpster fire quickly spread to the pawn shop. Windy conditions helped the fire grow rapidly and force firefighters to battle the blaze from outside the structure.
City crews arrived and demolished the building due to the decision that it posed a public safety hazard.
No injuries were reported.
