A fire on the Pawtucket-Attleboro line spread to dozens of cars and multiple sheds Friday afternoon.
Pawtucket and Attleboro firefighters responded around 5:15 p.m. to heavy smoke in the area of Rice and Weldon Streets behind Sterry Street Towing in Attleboro.
Crews arrived on scene to find several vehicles on fire and two campers.
The Pawtucket Fire Department said 30 to 50 cars were involved with three to five sheds totally destroyed by the flames.
"It was a lot of stuff in there and it's all gone," said Deborah Duby.
Two of Duby's backyard sheds were completely destroyed in the fire. She told NBC 10 News she was always concerned with her property being so close to the Sterry Street parking lot.
"Some of the cars are extremely close to the fence," she said. "I'm relieved in knowing my house is still standing and we didn't lose anything in the house, but it could happen again."
Pawtucket Battalion Fire Chief David Cairrao said heavy winds caused the fire to spread quickly into Weldon Street and Crest Drive.
"Originally, two campers were heavily involved in fire and that started to spread," said Cairrao. "Along with the wind condition that we had. That was my main concern that the wind was pushing the fire into these homes."
Crews were able to keep the flames away from the homes and most residents were able to return home. One family was forced to evacuate, and the Red Cross is assisting in their temporary relocation.
Firefighters worked to move cars out of the way to stop the extension of fire to more cars.
Cairrao said no injuries were reported however, the Sterry Street Towing Company building experienced heat and smoke damage.
Cairrao said the Massachusetts State Fire Marshal and Pawtucket Fire Marshal's Office will be investigating the cause.
